Duggy the Junkyard Dog

Bet you didn't know we had a mascot.  Well Duggy joined our team a little over a year ago and he's made himself pretty famous around town.

Most recently Duggy got invited to Whiting's newest hot spot, the Mascot Hall of Fame where he got to greet people on opening day and have a lot of fun with TONS of kids.  That's one of Duggy's favorite things to do.

You never know where you will spot Duggy - he can be at the downtown Halloween Parade, 119th St. Cruise NIght or maybe at Literacy Night at the local Elementary school...we've even heard he may show up at this year's Easter Parade.

Don't be afraid to snap a selfie with Duggy, he loves pictures.

Home of the Custom T-Shirt

How do you become "Home of the Custom T-Shirt?"  You cater to just about everyone who needs a shirt (may it be 1 or 1000).

The Junkyard has become well known for putting smiles on people's faces when they walk in wondering if we can make their dad a shirt with his favorite saying on it for his birthday or making a ten year old kid a shirt of a drawing he made and is so proud of or even making a shirt that makes ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE to us even after the customer tries to explain the strange saying or drawing (but whatever makes them satisfied, then we are satisfied).

The best part of making your own custom shirt is that you get to choose the color and style of the shirt (or sweatshirt), the font and color you want your lettering in and even the layout.  From beginning to end, it's the customers custom shirt.  We also do photo shirts which allows people to preserve their favorite memory on a shirt may it be a family members graduation photo, a baby's first birthday photo or a silly photo that no one would want to see of themselves on a shirt but that's what friends are for...torture!

Making custom shirts keeps The Junkyard ahead of what others don't offer.  And to top it off, we usually do 99% of them while you wait (5-10 minutes later you have your shirt).  Need a custom t-shirt?  Check out our store and click on the Custom T-Shirt button and we'll make it happen for you!

Small Town Retail - What's in a Name

After 10 years of running a small town retail shop, we've learned a thing or two about compromise.  "Why 'The Junkyard'?" we still get that question mostly every week from someone bold enough to ask us while we are printing their shirt (it's better than the question, "are you going to put that on straight"...that's a favorite of ours).

So anyway, why The Junkyard.  Well, when we first opened we had a very large space to fill and pretty much no idea where we were going to get all the shelves and display cases that cost lots of money. So we ran through a bunch of names (none of which I recall now) and we decided to go with The Junkyard because we could decorate the HUGE space with makeshift shelving with cardboard barrels and plywood, hubcaps could adorn the walls and a makeshift DJ booth took up a good amount of space. And we were EXACTLY who we wanted to be...a cutting edge, cool t-shirt shop that all the "cool kids" would shop at.  And they did.

As time went on, the local spiritwear store in town decided to close and we thought "do we want to be a spiritwear store?"  After some thought, we said "Sure, why not."  And at that same time we started to screenprint and also focus on customizing shirts while customers waited. We began to become something entirely different but our name was already out there and people were starting to come from other cities to have us make custom shirts.  I can't say we didn't think about changing our name, because we did, but it just didn't make sense. And though sometimes our new look and what we carry doesn't really fit into the Junkyard theme, too many memories and brand recognition are wrapped up in that silly name we conjured up nearly 10 years ago this Fall.
